The
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an exam that assesses
the non-native speakers of English proficiency in this language. It is
a prerequisite for all non native speakers of the language that want to
de admitted to an English speaking university.
The exam is elaborated by ETS, the same company in charged of the
administration and design of most official exams across the USA (GMAT
and GRE among other).
The test measures the ability of non native speakers of English to use
and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college
and university settings. During the last few years the exam has been
changed. One major difference with previous versions of the exam is
that today the candidate is asked to integrate the abilities he is
being tested on. This is an essential element since in an academic
background and in order to take full advantage of the teaching,
students need to combine these skills inside and outside the classroom.
Today it is possible, depending on the country in which you want to
take the exam, to take it as Internet-based (iBT) or paper based (PBT).
Differences between the exams are minor, the main one being that in the
latter the candidate has to integrate in each of the sections two or
more of the skills he is being tested on.
